Director Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali
Khan Memorial Society
Asif Ali Khan, grandson of Ustad Bade
Ghulam Ali Khan take pride in introducing myself as patron-in-chief and director
of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Memorial Society.
I have had the good fortune to see my
grandfather, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan up close during my
childhood. All of us, my father, Karamat Ali Khan, elder son
of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, my mother, and my grandmother along with my other
siblings, we all lived in Malabar Hills, Mumbai, India. That was the happiest
time of my life. I had very loving grand parents. My grand
father was always looking out for well being of all of us.
Though very traditional in his approach, he was affectionate. He also
demanded respect and was a disciplinarian. At home, his was
the last word and was considered the law.
I have many fond memories of the time.
I distinctly remember, when just before his departure to Calcutta for one
of his performances, I had insisted on getting a harmonium.
He had assured me that he was going to get it for me and that was a
promise. Sure enough, upon his return, he had brought me back
a harmonium. It was custom made, especially smaller in size
than a regular one so as to make it easier for me to play it.
One of
the other memories is the times when my grand father would take us to Chowpati
Beach in the evening time along with my grand mother and my older brother, late
Baqir Ali Khan. Sometimes, my mother would come along as
well. We would walk along the beach, play in the sand and
enjoy the snacks. The most memorable part of these outings
were the moments when my grand father would start to sing and would sing along
with the rhythms of the waves that came crashing down by the sand and rocks and
as the it would get darker, his melodious voice would create such an atmosphere
that it would transport me into another world.
Although, I was only a child, but the true “surs” would have their effect
on me. To this day, those evenings at the beach and the
beautiful melodies of my grand father take me to different world.
I also have had the fortune of getting the “taleem” from my grand
father. He introduced my elder brother and me to the
wonderful world of classical music. If events of my childhood
could have an ever lasting effect on me, I am sure the audiences, once given the
opportunity to listen to such melodious music, will have a magical effect on
them too and they will become listeners and fans of this form of music
forever.

He is
a very kind hearted person likes to help the mankind and being the Vice
President of Bade Ghulam Ali khan Memorial Society he is promoting music as well
working for the humanity.
Art is the only true reflection
of a society, his ideologies and his beliefs. When we organized the first Ustad
Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Music Conference in 2006, we wanted the classical and light
classical vocal music scene to serve as cultural barometer for the visiting
delegates showing them the vibrant and artistically rich face of our country
often ignored by the international media. With the successful completion of that
music conference we knew we had established a vital platform for cultural
exchange, but little did we imagine the music conference would grow in such
leaps and bounds and three years later become the biggest show case of the
performing arts in Pakistan. Festivals particularly those with the cosmopolitan
outlook such as the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan music festivals are vital for the
development of society. They open people’s minds to the
importance of the arts and expose the general population to performances they
would otherwise not be able to reach. In an artificially insular country like
Pakistan where few people have access to local creative output, Ustad Bade
Ghulam Ali Khan Memorial Society provides a window to the world of music and an
opportunity for our people to be inspired by a multitude of cultural influences
